The Irvine Company sold 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land to the University of California for one dollar to build the new campus after selecting a location in Orange County in 1959. A graduating address by President Barack Obama was given to mark the campus' 1964 dedication by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
